Goal DreamsFrance 2006 • 91 mins • Directors: Jeffrey Saunders and Maya Sanbar • Subtitled Presented by CWS How can a team without a recognised homeland, no permanent domestic league, no place to train, and with players and coaches scattered around the globe or even prevented from actually leaving their own country, compete in the world of modern football? Founded in 1928, the Palestinian Football Association is considered one of the oldest football associations in the Arab world. Since being recognized by FIFA in 1998, the team has risen 70 places in the international rankings, despite never having been able to play on home soil. Notions of national and personal identity are explored through what has been described as one of the Palestinian people’s “most beautiful dreams” – their bid to qualify for the 2006 World Cup.
A twenty minute speakers' panel follows every screening: |
